Manchester United have been priced out of signing Jadon Sancho because Borussia Dortmund want £90million of their £108m valuation paid up front. The winger is keen to return to the Premier League this summer, three years after he left Manchester City.
United were working on putting a package together to pay for Sancho with a series of instalments.
Talks have reportedly hit an impasse and the Red Devils are now searching for alternatives with a view of returning for Sancho next summer.
However, Dortmund are looking to extend the 20-year-old’s contract to ensure his valuation does not drop in 12 months’ time.
Reports in Germany claim the Bundesliga side will offer the England international a pay rise to £173,000-a-week – which is around half of what he would earn at Old Trafford.
Sky Sports transfer expert Dharmesh Sheth reckons Sancho will reject the offer as he because he does not want to hinder his chances of linking up with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad.
The noises I was getting from Sancho’s people is that if he doesn’t get sold in the summer, he won’t be signing a new contract at Dortmund,” Sheth said.
“That’s an added dimension in terms of how this plays out.”
United and Dortmund have been playing poker over Sancho and Sheth attempted to make sense of what was rumbling on behind the scenes.
He added: “It’s turning into one of those ‘who will blink first?’ situations.
“Last week there was what was described to me as ‘increased confidence’ that a deal could get done; personal terms were close to being agreed in principle.
“Man Utd want Jadon Sancho. Sancho wants to go to Man Utd and there appears to be a willingness from all parties to get a deal done.
