A non-profit/Non-Governmental Organization, The Green Heroes foundation, has continued activities to bring lasting peace to the nation.
The foundation recently organized an event in recognition of the day the Nigerian Civil war broke out 55 years earlier, the event which was tagged “6, 7, 67, NEVER AGAIN” was a marked reminder of the beginning of a war that took its toll on all Nigerians and the founder of the Organization, Air Commodore Abayomi Balogun, harped on the need for proper awareness on the dangers of war.
“Though, I never fought the civil war but I fought in Liberia and Sierra-Leone but we were lucky as officers that nothing ever happened to us because we could look after ourselves but the rank and files, who go to wars and return, usually have psychological problems.
“That is why you see a lot of soldiers bullying civilians and if we don’t start creating an awareness that these soldiers require care, orientation and reorientation into the society, we’ll keep having problems with theses soldiers which is what our foundation…is doing.”, Abayomi said.
It will be recalled that the Nigerian civil war broke out on the 6th of July 1967 and lasted for about 3 years.
Hosting some victims of war who actively participated in various wars for the Nation in the armed forces, Abayomi said the Green Heroes Foundation is dedicated to bringing to bear also, the needed care and attention that the veterans deserve.
The Green Heroes Foundation is a Non-profit NGO dedicated to the care and welfare of war veterans in Nigeria. The foundation has commenced various activities and events to execute its noble agenda such as the establishment of a warehouse where household items, food items, medical care and various other welfare are provided for families of both serving and non-serving military personnel who may be needy. The foundation at its Wuse Zone 3 offices also feeds children of the community once a day except on Sundays, this according to the Founder, is to express care love for these young ones so they will not be consumed by the bitterness of lack and pick up violence as they grow.
On this particular occasion which is part of the Foundations numerous scheduled activities which is expected to culminate in a veterans recognition award ceremony come September 2022, war veterans old and young were treated to refreshments and talks of encouragement while also being sensitized on the need and how to receive free medical care that is provided by the Armed forces.
Some of the veterans narrated their sordid experiences during the wars they participated in while some could clearly be seen with the scars and mars of war in their physical appearance.
Members of the foundation had earlier in the day paid a courtesy visit to the headquarters of the Nigeria Legion, the umbrella body for welfare of war veterans in the country. Receiving the delegation, chairman of the Legion, Major General M. A. Jubril Rtd lauded the activities of the foundation and pledged support.
