A Grade 1 Area Court, Karmo, Abuja, on Friday sentenced a 27-year-old man, Agu Chukwu to one month in prison for theft.
The Area Court judge, Alhaji, Abubakar Sadiq, sentenced Chukwu who pleaded guilty to the one-count charge and begged for leniency.
“Temper justice with mercy, I am sorry for the crime,” Chukwu said
He was given an option to pay N5,000 fine with a warning to desist from committing crimes.
Sadiq said that the punishment would serve as deterrent to other would-be offenders.
The convict, who resides at Gwoba Plaza Utako, Abuja, was convicted for one-count charge levelled against him.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Zannah Dalhatu, told the court that Esther Okon of Gwagwa Village, reported the matter at the Utako Police Station, Abuja, on Jan. 5.
Dalhatu said the complainant was charging her Itel phone valued at N5,000 when it was stolen and she discovered it early.
He said during police investigation, Chukwu confessed to the crime and the said phone was found in his possession.
According to the prosecutor, the offence is punishable under Section 288 of the Penal Code.
