State prosecutors said that Colombian President Juan Santos may have taken a sizeable donation from scandal-ridden Brazilian construction firm, Odebrecht, a report said on Wednesday.
It said that the state prosecutors launched an investigation into up to a million dollars in campaign contributions from Odebrecht for Santos’ 2014 re-election campaign.
The president’s former campaign manager, Roberto Prieto, rejected the allegations as “baseless.”
Odebrecht has admitted to paying some 800 million dollars in bribes across a total of 12 Latin America countries in a bid to secure contracts, according to ABC News.
The U.S. Justice Department contends that Odebrecht pursued a regime of “massive and unparalleled bribery” as well as bid-rigging for more than a decade, starting as early as 2001.
