Arsenal got knocked out of the UEFA Champions League by an embarrassing margin ending 10-2 on aggregate.
Bayern Munich had defeated the English team 5-1 in the first leg at home and replicated the score line when they went visiting on Tuesday night.
Theo Walcott had opened scoring on the night giving Arsenal the lead before Laurent Koscielny was sent off in the 54th minute for a foul on Bayern’s Lewandowski. The latter equalized from the penalty spot.
Bayern then ran riot against a 10-man Arsenal as Wenger’s side limped out of the competition in the last 16 for the seventh season running.
Reacting to the result Wenger said:
“We produced the game we wanted and we were really unlucky. Some of the decisions of the referee were very difficult to understand. Lewandowski’s off-side, there’s no penalty. On top of that you get the red card. Of course that killed us. After that it was very difficult for us to finish the game. It’s difficult to understand what happened. My team has produced a huge effort and played very well.”
Greek referee Tasos Sidiropoulos had Koscielny the red card after consulting with the official behind the goal.

Before the match, a group of about 200 Arsenal fans had matched outside the venue chanting Anti-Arsene slogans and holding up #WengerOut banners.

When asked if the protest reflected the mood at the club, Wenger replied:
“No, not at all. I have nothing to add.”
