Barely a week when yet to be identified Gunmen attacked worshippers at the St Philip Catholic Church Ozubulu, another deadly attack has been recorded in Onitsha, killing civilians and security personnel.
Information made available to Inside Sources disclosed that unknown gunmen on Sunday 13 August invaded the Assemblies of God Church on Oguta road Onitsha, Anambra State killing one policeman and a civilian.
According to an eyewitness account the gunmen had initially stopped at the Assemblies of God Church, but on sighting some policemen at the church, they opened fire on them.
Narrating the incident the witness said “When the firing became too hot, the policemen abandoned their patrol vehicle and ran away for safety. The gunmen moved to their patrol van and took a gun belonging to the policeman they killed”.
Another eyewitness who spoke to newsmen said, “One of the gunmen on Okada (motorcycle) shot a policeman and collected his rifle, and while escaping, a commercial motorcycle rider (Okada man) was also shot dead and the passenger he was carrying sustained injury”.
The policeman was the one armed among his colleagues; they were providing security while church service was going on at Assemblies of God Church, Oguta road Onitsha.
Meanwhile the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Mr Garba Umar while speaking to newsmen on the incident said it was not an attack on the church
Mr. Umar while speaking to newsmen said “My men were on patrol near the church when they were attacked by some gunmen. It was not an attack on the church, in the real sense of it”.
