Former Super Eagles player Godwin Okpara was on Thursday arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrate Court for alleged battery on his wife of 25 years.
The ex-international was arraigned on a one count charge of wife battery contrary to section 173 of the criminal law of Lagos state 2015.
The prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent of Police S. Imhonwa, told the court under the rulership of magistrate, Mrs. B.O. Osunsanmi, that Okpara had on many occasions caused his wife bodily injury through battering.
According to the prosecutor, Okpara sometime in August last year assaulted his wife by flogging her with a stick at their Ikeja GRA residence.
The Ex-international who however, pleaded not guilty to the charge was granted bail by the Magistrate in the sum of N 50,000 with two sureties in like sum following an application by his lawyer, Malaki Odo.
Odo who at the hearing maintained that his client was innocent, vowed to prove it beyond reasonable doubt when the case resumes in January 2018.
