Following the resignation of their former leader, countless number of Zimbabwe citizens and well-wishers gathered at the Harare stadium on Friday as the former vice president Emmerson Mnangagwa, was sworn into office as president.
The 75 year old Mnangagwa popularly known as crocodile appeared with a smiling face as he took the oath of office to succeed Robert Mugabe after 36 years as the president of Zimbabwe.
Born in the eastern Zimbabwe, Mnangagwa spent 10 years in jail during the struggle, where he made his O and A and a degree in law degree, and then returned to fighting for the self-governance of his father’s land.
After independence, he became a stakeholder of the ruling Zanu-PF party, and one of Mugabe’s closest aides, cycling through roles including spymaster and security chief, and administering the well-stocked party coffers before being made vice-president.
His presidential ambition however estranged his relationship with his former boss whose wife Grace Mugabe also nursed the same ambition which led to his been sacked as the country’s vice president following a terrorism accusation
