Governor Emmanuel Udom has reportedly escaped death as the Reigners Bible Church collapsed on Saturday, December 10, 2016 during the declaration of the pastor as a Bishop.
According to multiple reports, at least 18 people died in the process while over 50 were severely injured following the church collapse in Uyo, Akwa-Ibom State.
It was further gathered that Gov Udom escaped death as he was billed to attend the event, but he had not arrived at the church when it collapsed.
The church’s auditorium was said to be full to capacity as a result of the ceremony at the time tragedy struck.
An eyewitness said many people are still stuck under the debris.
“Many people are buried under the debris as emergency workers continue rescue exercise,” he told the newspaper.
“The governor has gone to the scene and is presently there helping with the rescue,” the witness said.
Most of the victims have been taken to various hospitals and mortuaries in the town, sources say.
