The Lagos state government and the state Ministry of Health have concluded arrangements to start the second round of the National Immunization on May 6.
The Special Adviser to Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode on Primary Health Care, Dr Olufemi Onanuga, disclose this in a statement signed by the Director, Public Affairs, Lagos state Ministry of Health, Mrs Adeola Salako on Thursday in Lagos.
He said that the exercise would be a The special adviser said that children under the age of five years would be vaccinated against poliomyelitis with two drops of Oral Polio Vaccine in the four-day campaign.
According to Onanuga the vaccine would be administered to children irrespective of their immunization status in the 20 Local Government and 37 Local Council Development Areas across the state.
In his speech Onanuga said “poliomyelitis was a highly infectious viral disease which mostly affected children, with symptoms such as fever, tiredness, headache, nausea, stiffness in the neck, and pain in the limbs”.
“Polio is one of the preventable diseases with no known cure; children under the age of five are the most vulnerable, as the disease suddenly strikes and paralyses them for life”.
The adviser urged all stakeholders to play a role in ensuring that children under five years are immunized at the PHCs free of charge to reduce the risk of death and disability from the vaccine preventable disease.
