The Nigerian Senate has passed a bill on free and Compulsory Education for all Nigerian children.
The Special Assistant to Senator Aliyu Magatakarda, Wamakko on Media and Publicity made this known in statement released to the public recently
According to the Statement the bill, which seeks to amend the Compulsory, Free, Universal Education Act 2004, had passed through the first, second and third readings before its eventual passage.
The Senate in the statement disclosed that the bill seeks to increase the block grant contribution of the Federal Government to education, while reducing contributions from state governments.
The statement said the bill is aimed at reducing the situation where most states are unable to access the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) grants owing to their inability to contribute 50 per cent counterpart funds to the cost of projects before execution.
The bill which was sponsored by the Chairman Senate Committee on Basic and Secondary Education, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko also seeks to provide free and compulsory education for all Nigerian children from primary up to secondary education.
