Few weeks after a top director in the Kogi state civil service commission killed himself, another staff of the Kwara state Universal Basic Education Commission(UBEC) at Oyun Local Government area of Kwara, Mr. Biodun Bashir has committed suicide over unpaid salaries.
A member of the Kwara Must Change group Abdulrazaq O Hamzat, who disclosed the sad event to public notice saying “to bring to public attention, the death of Mr Biodun Bashir, a staff of Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) in Kwara State at Oyun Local Government, who recently hung himself to death over failure of the Kwara State Government to pay workers’ salaries and their continued denial of owing workers.”
Bashir popularly known as ‘legal’, who was a driver working with the Kwara State Ministry of Education according to sources in the area have been living under severe hardship for many years without any hope of improvement.
Hamzat while informing the public about the death blamed the Kwara state government for the death of Bashir for owing the state civil servants salaries while on the media spreading propaganda messages of not owing salaries.
Meanwhile the Senior Special Assistant to the Kwara State Governor on Media and Communications, Dr. Muyideen Akorede, while reacting to the incident said that the government was not aware of the incident and could not be blamed for the action of the deceased because the state was not responsible for the wages of UBEC workers.
Akorede in his reaction said “we regard this as a fake story which has been propagated by a group on social media that is opposed to this government. While any death is regrettable, neither the Kwara State Government nor its local government councils are responsible for the payment of UBEC workers. The government is not aware of his death.”
