In his efforts to achieve the proposed mega city, the Akinwumi Ambode led Lagos state government has taken no fewer than 1, 612 physically challenged persons off the street of Lagos and has enrolled them into various educational institution in the state.
The Deputy governor of Lagos state Dr. Idiat Adebule made this known at the celebration of 11th International Day for persons living with disability held recently at the state capital Ikeja that the enrollment was to increase number of persons living with disability that could be employed in the state.
Adebule in her speech at the event said “this government will not leave this huge population of Lagosians at the mercy of alms givers but determined to integrate and assist them to be self-reliant, contribute their quota to the socio-economic and political development of the state”
In a similar note, wife of the state governor Mrs. Bolanle Ambode who was also at the event said “there is no point hiding because of physical challenges. All parents who have challenged children should not see them as bad omen; they are created specially by God Almighty to achieve specific purposes. They are not destined to be beggars; they are capable of living independently if assisted to acquire requisite skills”.
Mrs Ambode however called on parents of challenged children to register them in the special schools so that government could help them realize their full potentials.
