A set of suspected armed robbers and drug dealers on Tuesday stormed the Nigerian Police post at Ahiaukwu Olokoro, in the Umuahia South local Government Area of Abia state and burnt down the station alongside some valuables.
The Abia state Commissioner of Police Anthony Ogbizi who spoke on the attack on Wednesday complaints from residents in the area about activities of criminals led to the creation of two commands in the area.
According to Ogbizi, the police act on the tip off from residents which led to the arrest of four suspected drug dealers and robbers in Ahiaukwu Olokoro area of the state.
Ogbizi told journalists that the hoodlums attacked the station and aided two of the suspects to escape while officers in the post were about to transfer the suspects to the police division at Ubakala.
Ogbizi who in his words said that no life was lost and no arms were taken away from the station hinted that valuables like the police operational vehicle, one tricycle and a windscreen of a Volkswagen car parked on the premises of the station were damaged.
The police boss while briefing journalists said “the police were not deterred by the attack as we have mobilized more men and had arrested seven of the hoodlums who attacked the station. We are surprised because what happened is a challenge and we cannot give in. If we give in, it will encourage criminals to dominate the community. We will hunt down everyone involved and make sure that they face the law. We promise law abiding residents of the area that they will be adequately protected.”
