In order to safeguard online journalism, the Online Publishers Association of Nigeria, OPAN has launched a Free Press Defense Fund to help Timothy Elombah who was unlawfully arrested by men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squard SARS and other incarcerated online journalists.
The UK based journalist was arrested alongside his brother Daniel Elombah on the 1st day of January 2018, by men of the Federal Special Anti-Armed Robbery Squad, SARS, at the family’s compound in Edoji Uruagu Nnewi, Anambra state
The Elombah brothers who runs an online news portal Elombah.com were arrested over their involvement in the resume or resign protest in London during the President Muhammadu Buhari long medical vacation.
The move according to OPAN is in defense of freedom of information and the press in Nigeria
