The controversial Cattle grazing colony planned by the Muhammadu Buhari led Federal government of Nigeria seems to be making headway in some APC controlled states as the governor of Sokoto state Aminu Waziri Tambuwal is set to inaugurate the largest cattle breeding project in whole of the West African region.
The commissioner in charge of Animal Health and Fisheries Development, Tukur Alkali who took journalists on tour of the project site located at Rabah local government areas of the state said the cattle breeding project when completed in May 2018 will be producing milk and beef in high quantity and at the same time empowers farmers with modern knowledge of livestock production.
According to Alkali, the Sokoto sate government so far has spent over N2.8 billion on the project which include the purchase of Argentinean cattle that will be used for cross breeding, training of personnel, security and other logistics aside the 1. 3 billion naira spent at the initially for procurement of equipment for the project.
Briefing journalists during the tour the commissioner said “the project is the most definite long-term strategy to end farmers-herdsmen clashes as is being experienced across the federation, and in some neighboring West African countries. We hope not to only empower our farmers but also impact modern knowledge on mechanized farming and cattle breeding techniques.
About 13 cluster farms would be established to be run by private entities. All the cattle breeds will graze in these fields. We will also provide a research Centre and laboratory, veterinary services among others,”.
