A Igbo group, Voice from the East, has declared that Ndigbo do not want any war but a referendum to determine their sovereignty.
“We are Igbo and we don’t want war again but a referendum. We don’t want what happened in Turkey to happen in Nigeria,” it said.
The group embarked on a peaceful protest in Enugu on Monday in solidarity for the proposed visit of the United States (US) Ambassador-at-Large to Nigeria, Mr. Samuel Brownback.
His visit to Nigeria is tagged by the US government as “Nigeria is a country of particular concern over killings.”
The protesters urged the US government to save Ndigbo and Christians in Nigeria from a possible extermination and Islamisation.
They carried placards which read: “Fulani herdsmen are agents of Islamisation; Nigeria is a country of particular concern, US government stop killing of Christians; Buhari has failed to hold Fulani herdsmen killers accountable; this is Islamisation”, and “Stop killing Biafrans.”
Addressing newsmen during the protest, the Convener of Voice from the East, Comrade Kindness Jonah, said that they were on the streets to show solidarity for the proposed visit of Brownback of the US Commission for International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) over the killings in Nigeria by armed Fulani herdsmen.
“We welcome Brownback to Nigeria. We welcome USCIRF to Nigeria to stop the killing of Christians in Nigeria,” he said.
“We want to have referendum and we use the opportunity to ask the US President to help Biafra get freedom. We don’t want war but a referendum.
“We don’t want what happened in Turkey to happen in Nigeria. We are typically Igbo looking for freedom. We want freedom not killing again. Let them allow us to have the referendum to determine our faith,” he said.
